In a ruling of both public and legal importance, the High Court of Justice (Supreme Court of Israel) accepted a petition submitted by our firm (attorneys Dov Abramowitz and Ofek Bruck, and intern Noy Shalom Tzur) on behalf of Rabbi Eliezer Igra, Acting President of Israel The Great Rabbinical Court and Acting Chief Rabbi.
The High Court of Justice ruled that Rabbi Igra would be eligible to be elected to the position of Chief Rabbi of Israel, even if the elections are to be held after he turned 70, which is the maximum age of election according to the law.
The High Court of Justice (Honorable Judges Y. Willner, O. Grosskopf and A. Stein) ruled that the State of Israel must hold the elections as soon as possible, and that in any case, Rabbi Igra will be eligible to participate in the elections, while holding that the violation of the law – in the form of not holding the elections on the statutory date – cannot result in the violation of the right to be elected for those candidates who met the age conditions on the date set by the legislator.
